Tool 4 – Catchment Management Planning and Strategies
Many water management authorities have catchment management guidelines and planning frameworks in place. The information gleamed from planning frameworks inform catchment management strategies (CMSs).
CMSs are valuable to mining and metals operations as they highlight key concerns, high-value water assets and evolving regulatory requirements. They inform company-specific water management objectives and limitations as part of the planning and assessment stage.
Step Guide
STEP
1
Consider whether the company understands what existing and pending CMSs may cover in the area
STEP
2
Look into which agency/institution is responsible for developing and delivering that strategy
STEP
3
Read the strategy and ascertain if there are likely implications on water availability, quality or cost that would materially affect the operation in the short, medium or long term
