Look at Table 4 (p21) to see examples of best practices relating to creating an effective sustainable purchasing programme

In your SP policy, document your organisation’s direction, commitments and prioritise social and environmental concerns

Create a communications plan that explains your SP policy to internal staff and external partners. Explain how this policy will affect your company’s approach to procurement

Consider including a senior-level steering committee to oversee implementation of the SP practices and working-level committee to co-ordinate specific implementation

Ensure core procurement personnel are trained

Look at analytical skills you may require to support SP decisions, specification writing, and product and service evaluations

Create performance indicators by developing and tracking metrics eg reduced impacts, costs saved, local suppliers you’ve supported etc

Link SP to existing programmes and activities eg cleaner production, environmental management systems, supplier engagement activities
